Hello, my name is Royce Schlenker, son of Herbert
Schlenker. I am sad to inform you that my father passed away on Sunday,
September 28, 2014. Dad loved his years at Gambles and all the people of
Gambles he was able to work with in his 35 years with the company. Dad also
enjoyed the reunion get togethers that he was able to attend. I have attached a
copy of his obituary. Could you post his obituary on your blog site. I know
many of your readers will remember him.
Thank you
Royce Schlenker
Herbert Schlenker passed away Sunday, September 28, 2014, at
St. Charles Madras. He was born April 25, 1930, in McLaughlin,
S.D. to Christ and Emily Schlenker, the 5th of 14 children. He graduated
from McLaughlin High School in 1948.
He married Maxine Bergland on July 5, 1950. Herb began working
for Gambles-Skogmo and during his 35 years with the company, he
was transferred to Dickinson, N.D., Minot, N.D., International Falls,

moved to Madras in 1996 to be near his son and his family. While
in Madras, he volunteered with the Foster Grandparent program at
Madras Primary and Buff Elementary.
Herb was a history buff, especially reading about the Depression
and World War II. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were
his greatest joy and he loved it when they visited. He was well known
by family and friends for his “Herb’s Herbs”, a spice mixture recipe
that was handed down from his father. He passed the recipe on to
his son, Royce. His joyful and positive personality will be missed by
all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine; parents Christ and

Willard, Gerald, and Harold; and sisters Ruth Haggerty and Erma
LaFrenz.
